Water is used in our everyday lives. It has significant uses in household, industries, agriculture and also serves as source of energy in many but one of the most important uses of water is its purpose to hydrate. Drinking water is essential to our health but can also cause detrimental illness. Waterborne diseases can be caused by poor water sanitation or unsafe drinking water. This section provides information about water related illnesses that are common in the Philippines as identified by the Department of Health, so that individuals may be fully aware, modify practices on water hygiene and may educate others especially children on water and sanitation.
Water Related Diseases
Cholera is caused by vibrio cholerae bacteria and the usually gained by eating food or drinking water that is contaminated with human waste.
Diarrhea is one common gastrointestinal illness not only but children but across age span. It is usually acquired from ingestion of contaminated food and water.
Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella Typhi Bacteria. It is transmitted through ingestion of food and water contaminated with human waste.
Schistosomiasis is caused by a blood fluke (parasite) called Schistosoma Japonicum that is transmitted through a tiny fresh water snail (Oncomedia Quadrasi) It is transmitted to man or animal through skin penetration when they get in contact with schisto infested waters.
Typhoid Fever
