Going GREEN iSCHOOL
An Advocacy Promoting Environmental Health and Sanitation in School
Clean Air for Better Health
Breathing clean and fresh air is one of the individual’s physiologic needs. Air pollution is widely dominant not only in the Philippines but one of the major dilemmas across the globe. Many countries seek for programs and solutions to find answer on problems about air pollution.
In the Philippines, the government issued Republic Act 8479 which is the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999 which embodies a holistic national program of air pollution that focuses on prevention of air pollution, promotion of public education to be in union in solving air pollution and strengthening environmental programs for continuous total environmental rehabilitation.
Schools especially the educators are entitled to advocate measures on how to preserve the nature and to teach students on ways to prevent environmental destruction which includes the air, water, and land.
According to National Geographic, eliminating air pollution is one way in going green. It identified 5 easy steps to reduce air pollution:
- Start saving energy at home. Most energy equipped machines uses fossil fuels and burning such pollutes the air. When you save energy, you go greener. The following are some guidelines to save energy not only at home but may also be applied in school:
a. Turn off the lights when not in use
b. Use energy saving appliances
c. When it’s hot, use electric fan instead of air conditioner
d. Instead of using a dryer, dry your clothes by maximizing the
solar energy
2. Manage usage of heating and cooling machines such as heater,
air-conditioning. When using air conditioner ,make sure that there is no leak of cool air and the air-conditioning unit in running smoothly and properly maintained.
3. Recycle paper plastics and metals also reuse paper, paper bags
and plastics
4. Limit utilizing car. Children must advise their parents to reduce using the car but use public transportation instead. Walking and cycling can also be an option for shorter distance which does not only save energy but also a good form of exercise.
5. To improve the fuel economy to decrease release of Carbon Dioxide on air.
